I received a call last week from one of our scholarship recipients--the refugee of Bosnia and Herzegovina who has dedicated her life to early childhood education. We had committed to renew her scholarship and send a check in August. She called to decline the support. It won't be hard to understand why. She just cannot successfully juggle her family responsibilities with the demands of school and student teaching. And it won't be hard to understand that her family responsibilities take precedence over anything else. The good news is that she will be able to graduate with a bachelors degree in education. She will delay her teaching certification for now and look for a paraprofessional job. This is exactly why our "Her Scholarship" program is dedicated to women over 35. They have the top three barriers to success in achieving their degree-they tend to be low income, work full time, and have the responsibility to care for children and/or other family members.
